About the island
Menorca is arguably the most tranquil of The Balearic Islands and well known for having more beaches & Calas than it's larger neighbours, Mallorca and Ibiza combined. It is no wonder that people are starting to consider Menorca as a go to vacation destination.
Menorca is famous for its unique tradition of trotting horses, deeply rooted in the island’s culture and history. The Menorcan horse, an elegant black breed known for its nobility, agility, and spectacular jumps, plays a central role in local festivities and equestrian events. Trotting races have been held since 1935, with two main hippodromes in Maó and Ciutadella hosting competitions that attract large audiences.
The Mahon Flower Festival (Maó + Flors) is an annual event that transforms the town of Mahón, Menorca, into a vibrant celebration of flowers, art, and culture. In 2025, the festival will take place from May 18th to May 20th, marking its 11th year of celebration.
S'Àvia Corema, known as "The Grandmother of Lent," is a traditional figure deeply rooted in Menorca, especially in Mahón. She represents the period of Lent, which spans the seven weeks of spiritual preparation before Easter in the Christian tradition. This figure carries both religious and cultural significance on the island. Who is S'Àvia Corema? S'Àvia Corema is depicted as an elderly woman with wrinkles and warts, dressed in traditional Menorcan attire. She wears a long rosary hanging from her waist and holds a cross that reaches the ground. In her hands, she carries a salted codfish and a grill, symbols of the austerity and penitence associated with Lent. Traditionally, she is crafted as a paper and cardboard doll with seven legs, representing the seven weeks of the Lenten period. The Tradition in Mahón In Mahón, this tradition has evolved into a festive event centered around a giant figure of S'Àvia Corema. Every Saturday during Lent, this "giant grandmother" parades through the streets accompanied by musicians and other giant figures. During each parade, one of her seven legs is removed, marking another week closer to Easter. This event is particularly popular among children and families, who actively participate in the celebrations and enjoy the lively atmosphere. Cultural Significance Beyond its religious origins, S'Àvia Corema holds strong social and community value. She serves as a symbol of unity among Menorcans and a way to connect with their cultural heritage. The tradition also acts as a practical reminder of Lent's values of sacrifice, reflection, and spiritual preparation. Associated Gastronomy During Lent in Menorca, the cuisine takes on an austere character based on vegetarian and convent-style recipes. Salted codfish is the star ingredient, paired with legumes and vegetables. This diet reflects the principles of fasting and abstinence typical of the Lenten season. In summary, S'Àvia Corema is much more than a religious figure; she is a cultural symbol that brings Menorcans together through tradition, gastronomy, and community spirit during Lent.
